Ok so let’s talk water… hard water. Most of Massachusetts is lucky enough to have soft but those of us on the South Shore…not so lucky and Hingham has gotten excessively bad in recent years. Water is considered hard when contains higher levels of calcium and magnesium that can’t break down. Yah yah yah I know Kristy your speaking Greek! What does that mean to me and my life? Well… it means stains on laundry, streaks on dishes, corrosion on faucets and shower heads and of course makes cleaning your hair and skin terribly difficult! One of the things that happens to our hair from hard water is metal buildup. Metals can be found in pools, rivers and seas as well, which is why our hair seems worse during the summer months, but obviously we are most subjected to the metals in our showers. How do you know your having a problem? Most people will feel they are in serious need of a haircut (which is always good to keep up with!) But often times the reason your hair doesn’t feel clean after freshly shampooing and you can’t pull a comb or brush through your locks is due to hard water buildup. My salon does offer an in-salon treatment for those that are past home care help but using a clarifying shampoo weekly is also a good idea. For those of you with keratins you must be careful with clarifiers, talk to your stylist about the best solution. Maintaining the hard water/metals in your hair is important for optimal results of your color and lightening services. Now there is filtration systems for homes to help prevent corrosion and damage to your homes piping system. And there are also filters for your shower head that work well to protect your hair and skin. Many clients and stylists alike don’t recognize this problem soon enough so it’s important to ask questions if your hair is not feeling as it should or if you feel like the products you are using are just not working. More often than not there is a reason they are not working! Till next time love yourself, love your hair and keep enjoying the journey❤️
